SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Courtney Ware drew a bases loaded walk in the third inning, plating Camilla Carrera for UTEP’s only run in a 1-0 victory over no. 22 Fresno State on Saturday at the San Diego Classic. The Miners were not as fortunate in the nightcap, falling to fifth-ranked UCLA, 6-0.

UTEP moves to 15-6 on the season heading into a doubleheader at no. 15 Texas on Wednesday.

Stacie Townsend (13-3), who pitched both games, tossed a one-hitter and struck out nine batters against the Bulldogs, earning her the third complete game shutout of the season. Townsend suffered the loss against the Bruins, but not before recording five K’s in the outing.

UTEP combined for eight hits off Fresno’s Mackenzie Oakes (4-3) but could only convert the one run.

In the nightcap, UCLA’s Aleah Macon (5-1) scattered five hits and kept the Miners scoreless for the game. She struck out five.

The Bruins collected two runs in the bottom of the second, as Andrea Harrison drew a walk from Townsend. Samantha Camuso singled to put Harrison on second. A sac bunt put the runners on second and third. With two outs on the board, Kaila Shull laced the ball up the middle for the two-run score.

UCLA added three runs in the following frame. The Miners put away the first two batters of the inning, but four back-to-back hits by the Bruins lifted the score to 5-0. The final run came off an RBI-double by Harrison.
