EL PASO, Texas – Even with the tale end of the summer upon us, and the vacations beginning to start, the staff at Miner Illustrated is working twice as hard to bring Miner fans the latest news regarding UTEP’s efforts in football and basketball recruiting. In this edition of our “Weekend Recruiting Recap” UTEP66 gives us the low down of a new commit, new offeree and a few players who decided not to suit up for the Orange and Blue.
Just as we’ve been mentioning in subsequent Tweets and Facebook posts, the UTEP coaching staff continues to work to build a potentially outstanding 2011 recruiting class. ESPN’s Rise and Scout.com are reporting a verbal commitment from highly-touted wide receiver Ishmael Harrison out of Red Oak High School. Harrison, 5-foot 10 inch 170 pounds, is a gifted athlete blessed with 4.4 speed. Scout.com has Harrison ranked as a three-start recruit and ranks him as the 114th wide receiver nationally, while Rivals.com has yet to rate him. Other accolades for the wide out include a Dave Campbell Top 300 ranking and an impressive 94th best player in-state ranking from Fiesty’s recruiting blog. Choosing to stay in-state, he chose the Miners over TCU.
Tevin Williams, the highly touted running back from Euless High School in Trinity, Texas, has been offered by the Miners. The gifted Williams put up nice numbers (1167 yds and 20 tds) as a sophomore and had a good junior season (822 yds and nine tds) before it was cut short by injury. Williams has 4.4 speed, excellent strength (315 bench and 575 squat) and a reported 40-inch vertical jump. He sees the hole well and has excellent cutback ability as evidence by his YouTube video. Defending State Champion Euless Trinity uses his pass-catching ability as an added tool offensively. Scout.com lists Williams as a three star recruit (51st RB), ESPN.com (89th), Rivals.com (Not rated), Dave Campbell (Top 30 RB) and Fiesty’s recruiting blog has Williams as the 81st best player in the state. Currently Williams has offers from Utah and UTSA (Texas San Antonio) in addition to the Miners’ offer.
With the Miners losing their entire offensive line next season, finding top offensive line help is a recruiting priority. Hayden Morehead, at 6-feet 8 inches 310 pounds, is a big junior college lineman out of Palomar, Calif. that has peaked the interest of many universities. Morehead spent last season playing behind Tom Berry, a JUCO All American. With his size and strength, great things are expected of the athletically gifted Morehead. The Cortz, Colo. native received significant recruiting interest in 2009 with BCS schools Arizona, Arizona State, Kansas State and Wisconsin among the schools looking at Morehead. Currently Auburn and Miners are the two schools showing the most interest.
In other recruiting news, Matthew Ramondo (Arizona State), Aaron Wallace (UCLA) and Ronnie Ford (SMU), who were players the Miners were actively recruiting, recently signed with other schools.

I’m very interested in that running back, Tevin Williams. He seems to be a lot better than a 3 star ranking, I say a low 4 star. He benches 315, squats 500+ and runs a 4.4???!!?? That deserves a 4 star ranking! I hope UTEP gets him.
I think MIke Price is a genius when it comes to recruiting lineman…UTEP’s O-line this season is considered the best in the conference, I’m sure that UTEP will end up with Hayden Morehead!
Very good info!! Give my thanks to UTEP66, that guy doesn’t sleep or what? LOL
Morehead has 3 to play 2 which is a good plus.

Tevin Williams would be a great addition to the Miner program. I anticipate his recruiting will increase over the next few months. IMO, one reason Tevin wasn’t ranked a little higher is he is coming off an injury and the Trojans also have Terrance Tusan who rushed for 1200 plus yards.
There is much to like about Morehead, including he is an excellent student. IMO, if he progresses as many predict, he could be an instant starter and play an integral part of the 2011 season.
Miner Niner,
He sleeps, but he obviously thinks about UTEP recruiting 24/7.
By the way, the film on my son on you tube is when he was only 6’6″ and 15 years old. I have more film, but he was kinda lost in the shuffle and ended up at the JUCO because of the great players Palomar turns out. He graduated very young at 17 and is now changed drastically in his athleticism. Traveled the country his senior year and never saw a better lineman, he was just from a very small school at 7000 feet in Colorado.
Thanks Roy for the information on his highlights. Hayden’s 2008 Yahoo profile also reports a 315 bench and a very impressive 510 squat, in addition to a 3.0 GPA.
