EL PASO, Texas – Thankfully for the Miners there wasn’t a recruiting slow down with the advent of fall practice. As reported by Chris Avila on the MI Twitter feed, the Miners have added another verbal commitment from a talented safety prospect in the Texas area.
Huhn is a speedy safety out of Cibolo Steele High School, which is just outside of San Antonio. At 6-feet 180 pounds and 4.47 speed, Huhn has the physical skills to play strong safety at the next level. Last year he recorded 57 tackles and had seven pass break ups playing for the Texas 4A Division I regional finalist. The athletically gifted safety was a member of the 4A All State Baseball Team. In addition to the Miner offer, he has interest from Houston and Rice.
We won’t stop there though as another member of the Cibolo football team is receiving a long look by the Miners. Taurean Anderson, 6-feet 176 pounds, is a solid defensive back prospect with 4.43 speed and an outstanding 38-inch vertical jump. Last season Anderson had 42 tackles, seven pass break ups and three interceptions. Anderson plays corner at Cibolo but may be projected as a safety due to his tackling ability and closing speed. Currently he has no reported offers, but is drawing interest from New Mexico, Purdue, Northwestern, Wake Forrest, Baylor and Texas A&M.
Always looking for a quality lineman, the Miners, as reported by Scout and Alltop, have extended an offer to Taylor Reich. The 6-foot 7 inch 285 pound offensive lineman from San Diego Westview High School had an impressive camp at the April USC Nike Camp according to ESPN Rise. Among other summer camps, Reich attended the Under Armour Combine. ESPN ranks Reich as the 145th offensive tackle nationally. Currently, he has an offer from the Miners and is receiving long looks from Arizona, Kansas, Nebraska, USC and UCLA.
Miner Rush reported earlier this week that the Miners are looking at potentially extending an offer to defensive end Herbert Gonzales from San Antonio Southwest High School. Gonzales is a 6-foot 2 inch 290 pound defensive force with 4.9 speed. He also excels in the classroom with a 3.8 GPA. Last year Gonzales played defensive end but is moving to defensive tackle this season. He is projected at that position for the collegiate level due to those talents. ESPN ranks Gonzales as the 119th defensive tackle nationally. Fiesty’s recruiting blog has Gonzales in his top 150 players within the state at 147. Gonzales is very impressive when you watch his highlight video and, in my opinion, would be nice complement to the young Miner defensive line. Reportedly, the Miners are close to offering as are several other schools, including BYU and Texas A&M.
Scout reports Michael Sorrells, an athlete from Austin McCallum High School, has picked up an offer from the Miners. Sorrells, at 6-foot 3 inches and 205 pounds, brings a lot of talent to the football field, both offensively and defensively. Last year he rushed for 1,300 yards, including 22 touchdowns. Sorrells has 4.5 speed and excellent offensive skills. With his over-athletic skills and his frame he is also projected as a safety or linebacker at the next level. Sorrells was an All District 26-4A defensive end during his sophomore campaign. Among his accolades are a Dave Campbell Top 30 running back rating, All District 26-4A running back, TSWA 4A All State Team and All Central-Texas second team. In addition to the Miners, Sorrells holds offers from Idaho, Virginia, Colorado State, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State and Tulsa. With Sorrells’ offensive and defensive skills, he has the potential to contribute early on either side of the ball.
In other recruiting news Junior Pomee has revisited his verbal commitment and reopened his recruiting. Pomee, who has been offered by the Miners, lists his top three at Arizona, Florida and UCLA. Mike Moore, Darrell Kelly-Thomas and Marquel Bryant, three defensive stalwarts the Miners were actively recruiting, verbally committed to Minnesota, Arkansas and Kansas State respectively.

You guys are putting a lot of good work into this website. Great Job, keep it up!
Ryan Boatright from Aurora, IL PG, 5-10
Boatright was in full attack mode on Day 3. The cat-quick lead guard got into a scoring groove. He got to the rim and finished over taller defenders, used his tight handle to create space for the pull-up, knocked down a couple open 3s, had a sweet two-hand flush on the break and repeatedly dropped dimes, while playing only about half the game. Boatright likes West Virginia, UTEP, Tennessee and Miami at this point.

Quantumii_usa,
Thanks for the information. We’ll be sure to check up on it.
Quantumii,
Thanks for the excellent information on Ryan Boatright. He is a talented guard and has much to offer. Boatright in June 2007, prior to entering high school, committed to USC and it’s then head coach Tim Floyd. With Floyd’s departure his recruiting reopened.
SG Phillip Greene from Chicago, IL is showing interest in UTEP!!. He is considering West Virginia, UTEP and other east coast universities.
Thanks for the info on Greene, he is a talented combo guard and an interesting prospect for the Miners. I am interested to see how his recruitment unfolds with his move to Florida (IMG Academy) for his senior year.
A few more prospects showing interest in UTEP:
Timmy Knipp from Elliot County, KY; SF, 6’7 185lbs
Knipp is a long and lean athlete that will need to add strength but his skill is very good. He can shoot the deep three off the catch with time and space and he likes to attack the rim along the baseline where he displays good touch and body control. Knipp will also post smaller defenders and when forced off the lane he can face up and knock down the mid range jumper. Knipp is also a good defensive rebounder and is a good enough ball hander to go coast to coast. He also uses his length to block shots. Knipp has good timing on the ball and often changes the shots of smaller perimeter players when he does not get the clean block. Knipp is very smooth on the offensive end of the floor and has a bright future with steady improvement.
Mychal Ammons from Vickburg, MS; SF 6’6 205lbs.
Mychal is a solid combo wing. He can play either wing position offensively. He is a solid jump shooter with range to 20 feet. Ammons can also score off the bounce, mostly using his dribble to create space for his jump shot. As Mychal continues to grow he is becoming more of a wing forward than a wing guard. He is a solid if not good basketball athlete. He is a capable rebounder for a perimeter player. Mychal has been on the big time basketball scene since he was in the eighth grade, so he is a seasoned veteran of the summer basketball atmosphere already. Defensively he is solid. He is able to use his length and size against smaller perimeter players effectively. His top 3 are UTEP, South Carolina and Missouri.
Tavon Sledge from Dix Hills, NY; PG 5’9 155 lbs.
What makes Sledge special is his great speed and quickness with the ball. He also has a killer first step and excellent body control. He can get into the lane at will where he can finish with either hand after weaving in and out of heavy traffic. Sledge uses his tight handle to make plays and get out of trouble. He thrives off being pressured. He must add strength and develop a perimeter shot. If he can shoot he did show it because he passed up many shots when the opponent back away because of his ability to beat defenders off the dribble. Sledge can run the team and offense and set the tone on the defensive end of the floor. He pressures the ball with his lateral foot speed and quick hands. He can pick up full court and make the opposing point guard work for every inch of the court when advancing the ball. If Sledge can keep the defense honest with a consistent jumper his game goes to the next level.
LeAntwan Luckett from Ridgeland , MS; SG 6’4 205 lbs.
He is a high-flyer who can really finish in the lane. He excels in transition and on the baseline with drives to the rim. However, when put in the half court his game seems to deteriorate somewhat, lacking the ball-handling ability to go find a shot on his own or range to consistently knock down jump shots. If you give him a lane to the basket he is either getting the rim or getting fouled. He seems to have small hands that hurt his ball-handling abilities. LeAntwan showed his prowess in the passing lanes once again, but was not able to lock on to Nelson in the half court to shut him down.
Source maintains other schools in the mix – besides Iowa State – for Chris Allen are St. John’s and UTEP.
Just and update, Timmy Knipp recently committed to Eastern Kentucky. Knipp is one of four Kentucky players offered by UTEP. MI is working on getting info on the other three players.
Recruits from KY interested in UTEP:
Remy Abell PG 6’4 197lbs
George Fant SF 6’7 235lbs
Any word on Chris Allen?…. He has a lot interest in UTEP!!!
Mychal Ammons took an official visit to Missouri State this past weekend (10/1-10/2/10)
