EL PASO, Texas -After a weekend of wins from the Miners, the awards came rolling Monday morning when Dakota Warren, Katie Doman, Chandra Morden and Stephanie Figueroa were recognized by Conference USA.
Warren was named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday, and was also tabbed one of three Lou Groza Award “Stars of the Week.”
Dorman and Morden were chosen as the Conference USA soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, after leading UTEP to a pair of wins on the first weekend of league action, the conference office announced Monday.
Warren kicked three field goals, including the game-winning 18-yarder as time expired, lifting UTEP to a 16-13 win over Memphis on Saturday in the Sun Bowl.
Morden came up big in net time-and-time again this weekend, turning away 14 of 16 shots faced. Morden now sports a save percentage of .857 (second C-USA), GAA of 0.89 (fifth C-USA) while having made 42 saves (fifth C-USA).
Dorman rose to the occasion with a goal and two assists over the weekend. Beginning with the game against UAB, she sent a touch pass to a wide-open Skye Schultz who one-timed the shot home to give UTEP the 1-0 lead. In the triumph against UM, Dorman threaded the needle with a well-struck pass which found the foot of freshman Gina Soto just inside the box. Soto buried the shot, and the Miners went on to enjoy the win.
Volleyball’s Stephanie Figueroa was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week.
Figueroa guided the Miners to a 2-0 start in Conference USA as UTEP swept East Carolina. She anchored a strong defensive unit by registering 6.33 digs per set, including a mark of 7.65 on Saturday. Overall the junior transfer tallied 23 digs, which was her second-best effort on the year.
All three squads will be on the road this weekend. Football travels to Albuquerque to face the University of New Mexico while soccer and volleyball head to Houston to face the Rice Owls. Volleyball returns for a match on Sunday against Houston.
