EL PASO, Texas – On the heels of wins this weekend, the football and volleyball teams each had a player recognized by the Conference USA offices Monday afternoon.
UTEP senior wide receiver Kris Adams was honored as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week while volleyball’s Stephanie Figueroa has been selected as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week
Adams reeled in five catches for 134 yards, a 26.8-yard average, and scored three touchdowns as UTEP beat Rice, 44-24, on Saturday in the Sun Bowl. Adams scored on receptions of 26, 18 and 73 yards from Trevor Vittatoe. It marked the seventh game with multiple touchdown receptions of Adams’ career, tying the school record established by Lee Mays (1998-2001).
Adams tied his career-high for TD catches and moved past Chris Francies into eighth place on UTEP’s career receiving list with 2,140 yards. Adams posted the eighth 100-yard receiving game of his career, tying him with Bob Wallace (1965-67) for the seventh-most in UTEP history. He also extended his streak of games with a reception to 30.
For Figueroa, it marks the second Defensive Player of the Week distinction. She earned the league’s weekly prize on Sept. 27 and becomes the first player since the 2005 campaign to capture the award twice in season.
Figueroa guided the Miners to a sweep of Marshall over the weekend. She anchored UTEP’s defense by registering 5.57 digs per set, including a mark of 6.0 digs per set in Sunday’s contest.
Overall, the junior transfer tallied 24 digs Sunday, which was her second-best effort on the year. She opened the weekend contributing 15 digs on Saturday.
Figueroa is recording 4.11 digs per set in 2010, including a 5.25 clip in league-only matches.
