EL PASO, Texas – Football is almost here. Almost.
We are excited and are chomping at the bit for the first practice to take place. Hearing the first whistle can’t get here fast enough.
In the meantime, as we plan our season carefully, we’ve taken some time to sit back and look at the big picture of UTEP athletics. UTEP66 starts things off with an editorial about how fans can help get the Miners some wins while Chris examines the vacant positions within the athletics department.
Gus brings a story of growth and learning in men’s basketball point guard Mike Perez as he reflects on the lessons he learned this past season. Finally, Josh wraps things up with a look at mid-major recruiting.
We have responses to some of our articles in the Reader Response section along with some more UTEP stats in the by the Numbers section.
Don’t forget to submit your drawing or image for the Miner Pride T-shirt contest. Submissions are due Saturday night!
As always, we thank you for your continued support of MI and UTEP. Let’s go Miners!
We’re curious to hear what you think and what you would like to see in the magazine as we move forward. Send us an email (show@minerillustrated.com) and have your voice heard.

Nice. Good work on the mag!
The article which described the El Paso community supporting the Miners is exactly right. I am not a permanent resident here, but do fully support the UTEP athletics department. It is the main attraction here in El Paso and will be so for a very long time. I do not understand how less productive programs can have loyal fans that show up in droves for game day. Do commentators ever sit back to ponder if Texas (UT) has always had a successful program? TCU was unheard of before the recent years of positive seasons; Auburn was only spoken of during the annual Iron Bowl. It is disheartening to see how many local residents will post negative remarks. If you have nothing positive to post, then please keep it to yourself. There are so many people riding the football team off before the initial game, look into the Bio of Nick Lamaison and it could bring hope!
John, excellent points.
Another school which zoomed into the ten rankings on regular basis is Boise State. Almost out of nowhere it became one of the better football programs around year in and year out. Idaho is a beautiful state and Boise is a nice city, but they got there and are staying there due to a supportive community, administration, excellent coaching staff and a commitment to winning.
Great story on Mike Perez. I hope he has a break out year and do the things he is capable of. He is a big time scorer and very athletic.
