EL PASO, Texas – As football closes in on their November schedule and basketball right around the corner, Miner Illustrated continues to bring the most up to date recruiting information on potential UTEP recruits.

In football recruiting news…

Offensive lineman Christian Harper (6’5 270 lbs) from Galena Park, TX (North Shore HS) verbally committed to UTEP (2012 class) this past Monday.  Harper is an intriguing prospect with plenty of potential as evidenced by his quick feet and size.  He is rated a 2-star lineman by Rivals.com and continues to improve.

As per Scout.com:  Great natural build for an offensive lineman. He is a natural 6’4 and 270, thus he should get to over 300 on the next level. Moves like a tight end despite him being a big man. Needs to be more consistent, at times he turns in average plays and not the dominating plays you would expect out of a future star.

JUCO OT Pierce Burton 6’7 290 pounds 40/4.8 s from San Francisco, CA (College of San Francisco CCSF) received an offer from UTEP. Burton is up to six offers: Fresno State, Indiana, Kentucky, Southern Methodist, West Virginia and UTEP.

Burton signed and enrolled at San Jose State before moving on to CCSF.  He was heavily recruited by Hawaii, ARMY, Boise State and PAC-12 school out of high school.

Burton came on to the scene after he attended the Nike combine in Oakland, CA in 2009. Out of more than 1,000 players, he was ranked No. 4 at the combine with the top 3 all running backs. The rankings were based on an index that corresponds to a player’s height and weight with his performance in the 40-yard dash, pro-agility shuttle, vertical jump and Powerball throw. Burton’s score was the best nationally among offensive linemen and tight ends.

At the combine, he ran the 40 in 5.0 seconds, had a vertical jump of 30 inches and threw the 7-pound Powerball 45 feet. The Powerball replaced the bench-press drill as a measuring tool, but it is reported he can bench press 350 pounds.

On the basketball front…

2013 PF Johnathan Motley 6’8 195 pounds from Houston, TX (North Shore HS)

Motley has offers from Nebraska, Rice, Houston and UTEP. He is getting interest from Texas, Baylor, Oklahoma, Marquette and South Carolina among others.

He is rated top 60 player in class 2013, 4 stars with a 92 grade by espnu.com and 3 stars (106 overall) by rivals.com

As per espn.com: “Motley is a high energy combination forward that can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim, rebound and finish. He is a potential match up problem and has tremendous upside”.
