The Scouting Mine

After big wins by the UTEP football and basketball teams over the weekend, Miner Illustrated has some more good news as Angel Luna brings some exciting recruiting updates to share with the Miner Maniacs out there.

Getting started with some basketball news …

The big news to come out yesterday was the formal announcement that SF Twymond Howard (6-6, 180 pounds) from Pearl, Mississippi (Pearl HS) signed his letter of intent yesterday during the 2012 early signing period and sent his LOI in to the UTEP offices. Rumor has it he actually signed the letter and sent it in to Tim Floyd last week, but wanted to have a celebration of sorts back home with his family and friends. Whatever the case was, there is no question Howard is a huge get for UTEP as he is a top 100, four-star (Scout) recruit and is one of the highest rated basketball players to ever sign with the Miners.

In football recruiting news …

JUCO DT Ty McKinney 6’3 310 pounds from Athens, TX (Trinity C.C.) received an offer from UTEP. McKinney has offers from Kansas, Arkansas State and Houston among others. Played his high school football in Fort Worth, TX (Trimble Tech HS). In 10 games played this season at Trinity, McKinney has 29 tackles (18 solo), four sacks, two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.

CB B.J. Hendrix 5’10 188 pounds from Rochestrer, MN (Rochester C.C.) is getting some interest from UTEP. Hendrix is being recruited by Tennessee State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Prairie View A&M, Ball State, Illinois State, Rice, and Southern Illinois.

He is a speedy defensive back with great ball skills. He needs to continue working on his footwork but shows a nice burst and quickness out of his pedal and closes the cushion fast. He was recruited by Arizona, Ball State, Oregon, Stanford and Indiana out of high school before deciding to go JUCO. He should be ready to join a team by December. He played RB/Safety and special teams while at O’Fallon Township High School in O’Fallon IL.
